Hello Reader,

What if gratitude didn’t have to be forced?

This week, we’re cracking open a surprisingly small, refreshingly guilt-free book that explores gratitude from a new angle.

This Week’s Featured Book: The Little Book of Gratitude by Dr. Robert A. Emmons

As much as I love reading on my Kindle, this is one book that belongs in my physical collection.

It's a small yet powerful book by Dr. Emmons — packed with insights on gratitude that are backed by science, and yet so very practical.

Emmons' research is based on fMRI brain imaging — showing how gratitude can activate multiple parts of our brain, including the reward pathways, bringing both emotional and physical benefits.

Book Rating: A perfect 5 📚📚📚📚📚

What I Love About This Book:

  • Actionable tools for practicing gratitude: Emmons provides practical tips that make gratitude feel approachable.
  • Perfect for quick reads: It’s small enough to carry in a pocket or bag—perfect for waiting in line or at the doctor’s office instead of doom-scrolling.
  • Reframes self-sufficiency: Gratitude reminds us that self-sufficiency is a myth. You might earn the money for an amazing espresso, but so many hands—from farmers to baristas—make it possible. Gratitude connects us to the bigger picture.

I’m recommending this book because it’s an easy, no-pressure, book that – every time I pick it up and read a few pages – I am reminded that life is less about me than I think it is. And much more about making sure I’m holding space for joy, contentment, and gratitude even when life is frustrating, complicated, or scary.

My copy is getting worn. It's marked up. Filled with sticky notes from my Past Self. And that makes it even more beautiful. But you're a fellow book lover, and you already know that. 🙏🏻

Your Turn

Next week's book list is a compilation of "go to" books that re-center you when life feels like it's spiraling out of control.

I'd love to add your favorites to the list, so please hit reply and let me know.

Hey Reader, What's already on your 2025 reading list? Are you heavy in a particular genre or author? A few of the 30ish titles in my 2025 reading folder My 2025 book folder is a mix of biographies, fiction, and an ambitious literary classic or two. Some are about personal growth, but most of what I read next year will be just for fun—because I've learned that a lot of growth happens when I stop trying so hard. Especially when it comes to reading. Studies show that reading for pleasure reduces...

And since I was about 12 or 13, I’ve kept a small but meaningful tradition: every year, I read about JFK. I was born in a small Northeast Arkansas town — less than 24 hours after President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. I think about that a lot—the timing, the strange closeness to history. The events of that day were enough to send my mom into...
